Steve Jobs leaves behind contributions to technology and humanity

This Wednesday (05) is a day that will be remembered for several years, and maybe decades. The date will remind the world of someone who left far too early, as it will never be known the kind of contributions that could still come from Steve Jobs, Apple’s main visionary and author of most of the company’s creations. At the age of 56, Jobs passed away after several years struggling against a pancreatic cancer.

Words of Wisdom

Besides being responsible for great contributions to technology as we know it today, Jobs also influenced people’s lives by sharing knowledge and a different way of seeing things. At the famous speech he made to the Stanford students in 2005, Jobs remembered the quote he read at 17 which said “if you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll almost certainly be correct.”

After having that read, Jobs said that “it made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” When the answer was a negative, Jobs would know that it was time for a change, “because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fell away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.”

Global Commotion

The sadness over his death is not something that could be restricted to his home country, the United States. Fans of his products all around the world demonstrated in some way that the loss means something to their lives. All of the official Apple stores in the world, about 300, kept their lights off throughout Thursday (06) following his death.

Besides the company’s own honor, fans went to the Apple Stores as a way of thanking him and saying goodbye. Some used real apples, the fruit, to represent a ceremony. Others, like the Chinese student Jonathan Mak, made an illustration, which earned him a job, as it gained popularity on the internet for the resemblance with Jobs own designer preferences.
