Shutdown Possibility Gets Closer to US Government

After the United States went through one of the worst crisis ever registered, this is the moment when politicians and representatives try to come up with plans that will reduce the government deficit. Besides the Paul Ryan economical proposal, now Republicans and Democrats talk about a possible shutdown if a budget agreement is not reached.

Expectations on US President

Once the news of the shutdown spread, Barack Obama was questioned about the dimension of the possibility. “There’s no reason why we should not get an agreement,” he said “The only question is whether politics or ideology are going to get in the way of preventing a government shutdown.”

As the possibility of the shutdown is getting closer by each day, Barack Obama is expected to arrange other meetings until the final budget summit, which is on Tuesday. On the other hand, the shutdown is arranged to happen until the end of this week, which would leave minor services without resources over the weekend.

Republican’s demands

What Republicans most emphasize is the need to cut as much spending as possible. The House Speaker, John Boehner, demanded a U$40 billion cut. “We’re going to fight for the largest cuts possible, real cuts, not more smoke and mirrors. We can still avoid a shutdown, but Democrats are going to need to get serious about cutting spending — and soon,” Boehner said.

After attending a meeting with the President and the Senate Majority leader, Harry Reid, which lasted about 90 minutes, not much seemed to have been accomplished. Later on, both representatives (Boehner and Reid) held another meeting privately to try and arrange an agreement that would be approved by the Congress.
