The most recent example of how big that interest can be is the royal wedding between Prince William and the-about-to-be Princess Kate.

Besides the pure fact that someone in the British royal family is getting married and including a new person in the social circle, the way the media has been giving attention to the coverage of the event is news-matters itself. Royal Lineage

The most important royal figure in Britain today is Queen Elizabeth, who rules. Normally the oldest male inherits the throne, but Elizabeth had no brothers to become King. So, as she is the eldest between herself and her sister, Elizabeth was crowned Queen. The husband of a Queen does not become King, which is why her husband Philip is only Prince Philip.

The contrary happens when it is a male royal descendent who marries. As that is the case of Prince William and Kate, if Prince William is ever crowned King of England, his wife will be automatically a Queen. Before Prince William, his oldest brother, Prince Charles, is first-in-line to inherit the throne. After both of them, Prince Harry would be the one to be King.
