Matt Damon participates in save our schools rally
Famous Hollywood actor, Matt Damon participated last Saturday at the Save Our Schools Rally, which happened in Washington D.C. As Damon’s mother is an expert in child developing, she requested her son’s presence to make a speech in order to attract major media attention. Alongside Damon, Diane Ravitch, Linda Darling-Hammond, Deb Meier, and Jonathan Kozol also made speeches for those who were participating at the Rally.
Damon’s Contribution
After concluding his message, a news reporter questioned Damon’s logical thought over the teaching profession’s issues. The reporter argued that “in acting there isn’t job security, right, there is an incentive to work hard and be a better actor because you want to have a job, so why isn’t it like that for teachers?”
However, Damon did not lose his attitude and answered firmly “do you think job insecurity makes me work hard? It’s like saying a teacher is going to get lazy when they have tenure. A teacher wants to teach. Why else would you take a sh*tty salary and really long hours and do that job unless you really love to do it?”
Claims In Need
One of the major criticisms and praises to the Save Our Schools movement is regarding the demands that are being proposed by education employees. While they are criticized for not being too harsh, the same reason is used as an argument to claim that they are being reasonable. Either way, the major request presented by them is better funding for public schools, as the problems are not focused only on salaries value.
Another point which is on the Save Our Schools plan is about the high stakes on students’ evaluation. Besides that, teachers themselves and the entire schools go under the same high stakes to be evaluated. That said, participants in the Rally argue that the problem with America is not inside the schools, but poverty itself.
