John Wayne Gacy gets Bachmann in trouble
Once on the run for the presidential campaign, candidates have to be even more on guard about what is said publicly. As a matter of fact, one of the GOP candidates for the preliminary selections for the official name, Michele Bachmann, got confused while remembering John Wayne, when the actual person she was talking about was John Wayne Gacy. The difference between both Johns is that one is a well-known western actor, while the other was a serial killer.
Inevitable Mocking
An American character who could not miss the opportunity of teasing the presidential candidate is David Letterman, who invited Bachmann to participate in his show. When talking to the GOP Rep. on air, Letterman told her to do her homework before making speeches. Some of his suggestions include going all the way to Google’s second page and Wikipedia.
Besides making fun of her, Letterman also advised Bachmann to show up a little bit more on his programme, or else she will not win the presidency. “But here’s my point; you’ve got to be very careful and you’ve also got to be on this show. I was going through it and all of the presidents for the past 25 years, the only people who’ve been on this show as candidates have won that office. So, if you’re thinking you can duck us, then just forget about it. If you’re not coming to see us, historically, you’re a loser,” warned Letterman.
Cleaning Up The Mess
As part of the attention over her candidacy was transferred to the fact that she mixed up historical characters, Bachmann was questioned about the possibility of creating diversion over a gaffe. However, the GOP candidate reinforces that she believes that the main message was sent, as the important information is about values which both she and John Wayne share over their country.
Also, still trying to mend the pieces of the confusion she created for herself, Bachmann said “John Wayne’s parents first home was in Waterloo, Iowa and he was from Iowa and of course the main point I was making are the sensibilities of John Wayne, which is patriotism, love of country, standing up for our nation, that positive enthusiasm is what America’s all about.”
