Gonorrhea Hits peak of STDs Transmission

As several kinds of diseases are transmitted by sexual relationships, the CDC–Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, has established that April is the month dedicated to be the STD Awareness Month. Some of the reasons for determining a special date for this topic are: to raise the awareness about the seriousness and risks involved in not preventing against diseases and the importance of talking to partners and health care providers.

Numbers In The USA

One of the most reported diseases in the USA is gonorrhea, which today totals around the number of 700,000 infected people every year. Even with this proportion, researchers believe that not even half of people who have the condition report to the CDC. The gonorrhea most common group rate is women between ages of 15 and 24, followed by men between the same ages.

The symptoms that gonorrhea presents on an infected person, when symptoms actually can be identified, vary from men to women. For women, the most common are: pain or a burning sensation when urinating, increased vaginal discharge and vaginal bleeding between periods. For men, the symptoms are: burning sensation while urinating, white, yellow or green discharge from the penis and painful or swollen testicles.

Danger At The ACT

Besides the USA numbers, another concern is with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) community, which will receive an alert on the gonorrhea outbreak. According to health officials, the number of cases went from last year’s 13 to 45 this year. Officials also state that this is the highest rate in 20 years.

The Canberra Sexual Health Centre director Frank Bowden noticed that the number of heterosexuals infected also rose since the last three years. About the possibilities of infection according to sexual options, Bowden said “Regardless of whether you are straight, gay or bi, you need to know there are sexually transmitted diseases in the ACT and the best thing you can do is get yourself and your partner a health check. When there is a partner change, you must have safe sex.”
