The way Gilt rolls

In order to become a buyer of the Gilt Groupe, the website requires that the new user completes a personal information form. To have access to the most wanted products the users have to receive an invitation to that specific sale. These sales are only available on the Internet host site and, usually, for a period of 36 hours.

Gilt was idealized by the pair of friends Alexis and Alexandra. In 2007 they decided to put into practice their innovative idea of providing this kind of service to general public. At first, their main market was in New York. But as their first online sale worked out, the couple managed to take their project up to a national scale.

Practical issues with Gilt’s services

A frequent customer of Gilt Groupe, Megan O’Brien, said “My sheets, my pillow cases, most of the books on that shelf and down there, my throw pillows, the jewelry behind there,” when exemplifying how many of her house objects were purchased from the website. Besides that sort of acquisition, O’Brien also points out that about 30% of her clothes are from Gilt.

A problem that online companies face on a daily basis is the frauds made by buyers that expect to transgress Gilt’s security system. Controller and chief accounting officer, Bill Severance, explains “Our business has grown a lot in the past year, but since we’ve implemented our new fraud management system last fall we haven’t had to grow the team reviewing suspicious orders.”
