Bipolar Disorder Gets To Catherine Zeta-Jones

The couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones has been going through a lot of suffering since last year. First, it was Douglas who was diagnosed with throat cancer, which left Zeta-Jones dissatisfied with the doctors for not discovering the disease on an earlier stage. After going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Douglas says that he is cured from the cancer. Now, Zeta-Jones has checked in a medical facility.
Series of health issues
Contrary to what happened to Douglas, Zeta-Jones’s need for medical assistance is because she has recently announced that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. What her publicist told people is that the actress decided to seek for treatment after going through the stress of her husband’s disease and felt unwell herself.
Even now that her condition is already general knowledge, it still is not known when she was diagnosed and where she receives treatment. What most people know about bipolar disorder is that it causes mood swings and depression peaks. Although, nowadays the diagnosis is not considered a death sentence, as several treatments exist to control the symptoms.
Consequences and possible reasons
Employee of the mental health charity Rethink, Mark Davies, interprets Zeta-Jones’ coming out clear about her condition on a wider aspect. “Although she’ll be feeling pretty fragile and vulnerable, she will have – in a sense – given some comfort to a lot of other people who are probably suffering in silence and probably feeling a great deal of fear,” he said.
Some of the visible symptoms that bipolarity show are low mood, intense depression, despair, high or ‘manic’ feelings of joy, over activity, loss of inhibitions and a mixed state of a depressed mood with over activity of a manic episode. The causes that lead to the condition are not well known, but some relate to genetic conditions, a physical problem with the brain systems which control moods and stress.
