Andy Warhol presented at Frist
For having contributed with the United States cultural development, Andy Warhol is considered one of the first artists from the Pop Art movement. His different perspective and way of seeing art and life gave him the inspiration to break through the traditional artistic tendencies and create one of his own. Now, after several years have passed since his death, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts is about to open a new exhibit with Warhol’s work.
Artistical Influence
The name given to the new exhibition is Warhol Live: Music and Dance in Andy Warhol’s Work. For those who do not know very much about the artist’s life, Warhol’s studio was named The Factory and, besides creating his own frames, musicians, models, and several characters from the 60’s and 70′s, used to hang out and make their work as well.
As time passed by, Warhol eventually had to move from one place to another, but all of them got called “The Factory”. The original one was first inhabited in 1962 until 1968. As the new exhibition prioritizes music alongside his frame work, the main musicians who were part of Warhol’s social club were Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, and others.
Remembering The Past
About the work that will be exposed at the Frist, the Chief Curator Mark Scala said “His genius was to challenge the art world’s sacred cows — originality, the painter’s touch, the belief in art as psychological revelation — which he believed were irrelevant in postwar America, an era defined by materialism and the mass production of consumer goods, an obsession with celebrity and a burgeoning understanding of the impact of mass media.”
The date settled for the exhibition’s launching is on June 24. The title is a way to emphasize the way music influenced Warhol’s work, and how Warhol himself had a role together with the musician’s inspirations. The production of Warhol Live was made by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Other institutions support the event.
